Fig walnut bread with goat cheese and lavender honey

English version (German version below)

Every year I am so happy when it’s the season for figs. And of course, I always try out some new recipes. Recently, I had less time, so I could not go for huge experiments. Therefore, I decided to create a fig snack. The result was just perfect; I loved it so much that I even ate two portions. It is the ideal snack for spontaneous guests, a party buffet or just a small dinner meal.

Ingredients (for 2 persons):
1 fig
Half a goat cheese roll
4 slices of walnut bread
Butter
Lavender honey (you can also use other honey, but the gentle taste of lavender honey would be preferred)

Butter the slices of walnut bread and then put half a teaspoon of lavender honey on it. Cut two slices of the goat cheese roll and place them on the bread. Divide the fig into quarters (one quarter for one slice of bread). Now cut the fig quarter into slices and put them on the goat cheese. And there you go, enjoy a delicious fig snack.

Schon fertig, nun lasst Euch’s schmecken.

Spinach salad with avocado, walnuts, bacon and mozzarella

English version (German version below)

We recently had some friends come over to celebrate the end of the summer. After half a day in the kitchen we managed to get the buffet ready just before the guests arrived. When we summarized the party, later, from a culinary point of view, we realized that the spinach salad was one of our guest's favourites. And honestly, we also enjoyed this mix of ingredients.

So if you want to make it yourself, here is the recipe (for 2 persons):

Ingredients:

  • 1 bowl of raw spinach leaves
  • 1 avocado
  • Half a ball of mozzarella
  • 1 hand of walnuts
  • 25 g of bacon cubes
For the vinaigrette:

  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1.5 tablespoons of vinegar
  • 1 fork of mustard
Wash the spinach and give it into a salad bowl. Gently roast the bacon cubes in a pan (do not add any butter). Cut the avocado and mozzarella into small cubes. Put them, together with the walnuts and the bacon into the bowl.

Mix the vinaigrette ingredients for about 2 minutes with a fork until you get a dressing sauce. Put it over the salad and mix everything well.

Peach Pistachio Tarte

English version (German version below)

When I was making my shopping this week I saw lovely looking peaches at the fruit shop nearby. Immediately, I had the idea of baking a peach tarte. To make it a bit more special, I decided to add pistachios, what, infect, was a great idea. Later, I gave two pieces of cake to our neighbour. She is a charming older lady who is baking at least one cake per week for many decades now and she knows her business really well, I can tell. Imagine how many eggs she has cracked for baking cakes… So I was happy to hear she was enthusiastic about this peach pistachio tarte.

Ingredients:
  • 5 peaches
  • 300 g puff pastry
  • 1 hand of non-salted pistachios
  • 50 g butter
  • 50 g sugar
  • 6 tablespoons of water
  • 3 tablespoons of peach jam

Baking:
  • Preheat the oven to 200°C
  • Put baking paper on your baking sheet, then put the puff pastry on it
  • Prick all over with a fork
  • Bake the pastry for about 5 minutes
  • Divide the peaches into eight pieces each and cover the pastry with the peaches
  • Then add the butter, cut into small pieces, and finally sprinkle the sugar on it
  • Bake for about 35 minutes
  • In the meantime, give 3 tablespoons of peach jam and 6 tablespoons of water into a saucepan and heat it, until you get some kind of syrup
  • Put the syrup on the baked but still hot tarte and then sprinkle the pistachios on it
  • Let the tarte cool down
Now go to your neighbour and share a part of the peach pistachio tarte, they will enjoy. Make a cup of coffee for yourself, put some music on and taste your peach pistachio tarte!

Pfirsich-Pistazien-Tarte

Oktoberfest Highlights

English Version (German Version below)

The Munich Oktoberfest (Beer Festival, or „Wiesn“ as you say in Munich, it means lawn), is definitely different from all other festivals in the world. But what makes it so special?

5 Highlights:

N° 1: Lebkuchenherzen (gingerbread hearts):
Buy one and give it to a person you like, either with a more neutral message „Ein Gruß vom Oktoberfest“ (hello from Oktoberfest) or say it in Bavarian „I mog Di“ (I love you). You can get them in all sizes and colours and with a lot of different messages. Keep in mind, looking at them is preferable to eating them.

N° 2: Tradition - by heart: Every year, on the first Wiesn Sunday, one of the big highlights takes place, the Costume and Riflemen’s Parade. Traditional music and other clubs show up in their costumes and sometimes play music. What is also nice to see: the traditional waggons from the Munich breweries.

Get some impressions: Photos from the parade

N° 3: Beer Tents
In total there are 35 tents on the Oktoberfest, offering a seat capacity 105.000. The Hofbräuzelt is the biggest one with 10.000 seats (and most of the time, it is full). At the weekend you often need a reservation to get into the tents. 6.5 million visitors came to the Oktoberfest in 2010, and 7 million Mass (1 liter beer) were sold. Guess how many roasted chicken were ordered: 0.5 million. Most of the time a little orchestra is playing traditional songs and often people stand on the bench, dance, sing and have a lot of fun.

The Hofbräu beer tent

N°4: Rides, there is much more than the Ferris Wheel
Stroll across Oktoberfest and discover a huge variety of attractions. Some are very spectacular (and maybe more attractive to look at than trying out yourself). Others just put a smile on your face, such as the chairoplane that might remember you of some happy days in your childhood. This year, I tried out a ghost train, it was definitely much more exciting than I had expected – and a lot of fun!

N° 5: Traditional Bavarian Costumes „Trachten“
The traditional Lederhosen (leather trouser) and Dirndl dress are part of the Oktoberfest feeling. Since mid summer you can buy them in all kind of places in town, from the cheap tourist version to the very expansive high quality model. Every year, again and again, I very much enjoy going to the Wiesn and wearing my Dirndl. In fact, most people wear Trachten, also those not coming from Munich. Many companies organize events on the Oktoberfest, it is definitely expected that you show up in Lederhose or Dirndl.

Traditional beer mugs

You still want to know more about Oktoberfest: till October 3rd (last day) you can get a live impression via webcam or click on the link of the official Oktoberfest website and read everything, starting from history to beer prices and other interesting and amusing details of the unique Oktoberfest.

Oktoberfest Highlighs

5 Highlights:

N° 1:
Lebkuchenherzen

A Gaudi!

Summer Raspberry Tarte

English version (German version below)

I simply love the taste of raspberries, blackberries and other red fruit berries, as they mean to me the taste of summer. This weekend I decided to make a last summer tarte (it is sadly getting cold here). I was hesitating between a raspberry and blackberry tarte. Then I thought, I will leave the decision to the fruit shop around the corner. They have lovely fruit in general, but the raspberries looked fresher, so the decision was made. The recipe is rather easy and can therefore be made even if you do not have a lot of time. As the fruit will not be treated in any way, make sure to finish the tarte within a maximum of three days.

Ingredients for the pastry:
120 g butter
50 g sugar
150 g flour
50 g grounded almonds
1 egg yolk
4 tablespoons of water

Ingredients for the cream:
350 g raspberries
200 g mascarpone
3 tablespoons of sugar
Vanilla bean or 1 small package of vanilla essence
Icing sugar to cover the tarte at the end

Short pastry Recipe:
Cut up the butter into small pieces. With your hands, mix in the sugar, then the flour, the grounded almonds, the egg yolk and finally include 4 table spoons of water. Form the pastry into a bowl and put it into the fridge for 15 minutes. Heat the oven at 180°C. Roll out the pastry and put it into a small tarte pan (approx. 20 cm diameter) and bake it for 15 minutes, let cool down.

Preparing the cream:
Mix the mascarpone with the sugar and the vanilla (instead of vanilla you might also use vanilla sugar). Put it on the bottom of the cool pastry. Then put the raspberries on it (be very careful when washing them). Finally disperse the icing powder.

Bon Appétit!

Sommerliche Himbeer Tarte

Bretagne: some more souvenirs of a great summer holiday

Enjoying the Breton seaside at Cap Fréhel and its light house

Everyday life has me back, since it is already a little while that I have returned from my great holiday in French Bretagne (Brittany). Though, from time to time I still have this big smile in my face. It is when thinking about some sunny, extraordinary and relaxing moments of our vacation. Right now, I am waiting to get my photos in paper format. Well, like everybody I am addicted to the digital camera with all the advantages it has. At the same time, I still very much like paper photos for a selection of my “best of” photos. Some of them, I put in a frame in the living room or somewhere by the entrance. And – I am still a fan of photo albums (though regularly changing my mind regarding my preference: either classic ones or those you create online and get sent my mail).

Here are some more souvenirs of a great summer holiday (beside the Saint Malo and Fresh Oyster posts):

The Mont Saint Michel, with its monastery and a long history, that goes back till the 6th century

The coast at Cap Fréhel, very impressive.

The historic town of Vannes in South Bretagne, ideally to combine shopping and sightseeing (especially if it is a cloudy day)

In the city center of Rennes they put deck chairs so that people can relax in the sun - I would love the idea of spending my lunch time there.

Macarons - nowhere better than in France, I'm just loving them...

La Baule in the South of Bretagne is well known for it kilometre-long beaches. We spent great afternoons there, playing beach ball, lying in the sun, reading a book or just looking at the sea. That's where you can really relax.

Restaurant Guide:
The top-preference is the restaurant "Le Carpe Diem" next to La Baule. Make sure to have a reservation and you will enjoy excellent top-cuisine in a location that is at the time cosy and stylish. Check out the website and you will get a very good impression of this extraordinary restaurant. Prices are more than fair for what you get, don't miss.
